Does my audio get uploaded anywhere?

No. The level meter and playback clip are produced entirely inside your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is sent over the network - you can run this page offline once it's loaded.

Why is my microphone silent?

Check three things: your browser has permission to use the mic (look for the camera/mic icon in the address bar), the right input device is selected in the picker above, and your mic isn't hardware-muted. On macOS, also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

Why are my levels so low?

Accepted Answer

Move closer to the mic and raise the input volume in your OS sound settings. Built-in laptop mics sit far away from you and often need a boost. If the meter still barely moves, try another input from the device picker.

Which microphone is being tested?

Accepted Answer

Your system default, unless you choose another device in the picker. The picker lists every audio input your browser can see once you grant permission.
